Work by Hans J. Eysenck and Ronald Grossarth- Maticek, of the Institute of Psychiatry, University of London, carried out a major set of clinical studies in Heidelberg.
They examined the effectiveness of a therapy in which people were asked to create new ways of behaving in situations that caused them unhappiness.
The simple changes they made were incredibly successful in reducing subsequent disease and death rates from cancer and heart disease.
Such simple changes improved immune system functioning as well.
The importance of Doing Something Different, rather than trying to think something different, was reinforced by the fact that the psychodynamic therapies had none of these benefits and may even have been harmful.
